Vision and Philosophy

Educational Philosophy
I believe all students have the desire to learn.  Education needs to meet that desire by providing the necessary tools and instruction to support it.  The school needs to encourage and inspire students in their learning by pulling from their prior knowledge and giving them confidence before they begin to embark on new ideas.  Students also need to own their knowledge by voicing their opinions in a safe environment.  Education provides students the opportunities to succeed in the world around and beyond them.

Media Center Philosophy
The media center supports the educational philosophy by giving students the resources they need to fuel their desire to learn.  The facility should have fiction and nonfiction titles that support the curriculum and goes beyond the curriculum to meet the information needs of the school and the surrounding community.  The media specialist should help patrons of the media center by instructing them in information literacy in order that they can be self-sufficient learners.

Media Center Vision
I want my media center to be a welcoming environment, a place where everyone (students, teachers, parents, community members) feel comfortable.  The media center I envision would also have an integral role in the school as support for the curriculum.  Students and teachers should also feel the media center is a place where information is easily available and one of the first places they can look when they start their quest for more knowledge.

Goals
My goals as I continue with my career as a media specialist are the following:
  • Increase collaboration every year.
  • Improve ease of access for students in the media center.
  • Obtain materials that meet the needs of the school.
  • Improve information literacy lessons (research, nonfiction books, searching for information, etc.).
  • Improve publicity of media center events.
  • Develop standard guidelines for all students who come to the media center.
