I work for the Center for Family Research in Child and Family Development department, the College of Family and Consumer Science at the University of Georgia . I have been responsible for the full-cycle development of a web-based database-driven application named Healthy Families Georgia Information System (HFGIS) as well as its system maintenance and data administration as a project manager.

I identify myself as a computer programmer whenever I am asked because I have been a person who writes codes (scripts) and creates computer-based software upon requests. Working in this field is quite challenging, satisfying and encouraging in many aspects. It is challenging because of the rapid transient and evolutionary nature of the technology field. Therefore, if you don't learn and utilize the kind of tools and technologies in time, you are more likely to fail. It is satisfying because you can earn more than average in general and you “actually” deliver tangible products. It is encouraging because you have people around you simply admiring your ability to do what you do although it may not be as sophisticated as people might think, and also you are “needed” to do the job. Most of all, it is fun.

I have been in the field of Informational Technology since 1994, and things have changed dramatically in terms of the tools we use to do what we need to do. Of course, what we need has dramatically changed also. In 1994, we were barely using Windows, Win 3.x, and now we have Windows XP. In 1994, the Internet was new to most people but now everybody knows it and a lot of people use it on a daily basis. In 1994, we developed software based on Windows or Dos, but now remote capability through the Internet is a big part of it. My specialty areas have changed as technology has and continues to evolve...

I think of myself as very organized and self-directed. I'm a planner and problem-solver. I can review things quickly and pinpoint problem areas quite well. As a project manager, my characteristics and skills have worked very well in every step of full-cycle development including analysis, design, development, and maintenance and data analysis. Nonetheless, I have realized one very important thing lacking for me over time…I work with a computer and other computer-related tools more than with people. I began seeking something beyond developing computer-based media and decided to go back to school.
