Alcohol and Drug Awareness
Students will learn facts about drugs and alcohol and practice handling peer
pressure.
UNIT: Just Say No!
LEVEL: Middle/High School (Adaptable to both levels)
TIME NEEDED: Lessons-1 hour PowerPoint-1 hour (group assignment that must be completed during the week)
OBJECTIVE: To teach students skills needed to avoid negative consequences related to drugs and alcohol, to identify the dangers of drugs and alcohol.
*** This lesson plan is in direct correlation with the Drug Awareness Week. During this week, students are exposed to guest speakers, presentation, and other activites realted to this topic. This lesson plan only covers one day throughout this weekly event. The PowerPoint interactive presentation can be completed at any time during the week and should be completed by all students.

Topic: Policy and Law
Standard: Examines school rules, system policies, and local, state, and federal
laws regulating purchase, sale, use, and possession of alcohol, tobacco products,
and other drugs.

Topic: Effects
Standard: Analyzes the impact of the use of alcohol, tobacco products, and
other drugs on the individual, family, and community.

Topic: Consequences
Standard: Recognizes and assesses the effects that alcohol and other drugs
could have on individuals operating vehicles and other equipment, including
the consequences of riding or being with someone under the influence.

Topic: Risk Factors
Standard: Assesses personal risk factors (e.g., heredity, family and peer
drug use, and academic failure) and protective factors (e.g., positive adult
models, coping skills, knowledge of resources, and self-sufficiency) for drug
use.
Procedures/Activities
Step: 1 Duration: 30 min.
Have students study the Alcoholism and Something to Think About handouts. Summarize the information and provide any additional relevant information.
Step: 2 Duration: 30 min.
Role-play situations in which one player wants another player to experiment with drugs. Have students respond in the way that is most natural to them, selecting refusals from the list provided (Ways to Just Say No).
