LESSON PLAN Grade Level: This concept is designed for students in second or third grade beginning the concept of multiplication. Objective: This lesson and game will help children learn and memorize their multiplication tables and be able to retrieve the answers quickly. Background Information: Several days before playing a multiplication game, children will become familiar with multiplication tables from 0-10. By the time the game is played, the students should know their multiplication tables. The game will help process the information into long term memory. Materials: Each student needs a laminated worksheet with multiplication tables from 0-10 to keep in his notebook for studying and practicing. The students will be required to study this worksheet for weekly memorization quizzes. For the game, required materials are a plastic container, chalk/marker board, and the numbers 0-10 written on small sheets of paper many times to put in the container. Lesson: After several weeks of teaching multiplication tables to students, you can play a game that incorporates multiplication and is fun for students. The teacher is to divide the classroom into four teams. The teams should be chosen carefully so that not all of the fast learners are together. Instead, make the teams fair; it is a good idea to have at least one student you can call the “team leader” that knows the multiplication tables well and will be able to help out his teammates if needed. Preparation: Before the game begins, have each team study and discuss their multiplication tables together for preparation. They can quiz each other or study their tables alone. Activity: The object of the game is to recall multiplication tables quickly. Each team will come up to the “box of numbers” where a student will pull out two numbers. Then another student will be at the chalkboard waiting for the numbers to be called out. The student must then multiply the two numbers chosen from the box. Members of each team will rotate pulling numbers and working out problems on the board. After the numbers are called out, the student has ten seconds to come up with an answer or no points are to be awarded. Correct answers get points, incorrect answers take away points. This activity encourages teamwork as well as memorization. Reinforcement is always helpful, so the team that wins the game should get some sort of award. After completion of the game, the teacher should explain that if any students had trouble they should work more with their tables and the class can play the game again soon if they show improvement. Hopefully, this will motivate the children into working harder. Conclusion: Upon completion of the multiplication game, the class will get back into their seats and we will discuss some of the problems the children had. For example, if a certain multiplication problem was consistently giving the children problems, the teacher should work out the problem on the board. Then, the teacher should hold a question/answer period with the students to see if anyone else needs help with specific problems. The students should understand that with the amount of time multiplication tables have been taught, they should know them well by now and if there are any problems they need to be worked out. Evaluation: After this multiplication game is played a few times, the teacher should reassess the children by giving more multiplication quizzes. Timed quizzes should eventually result in better scores and quicker responses. It is always beneficial to the students and teacher when an activity is fun and exciting, and practice will be helpful in the long run. There is a flash card program for quick recall and the outside practice should help the students with their quizzes and better performance on the game. |
