|
| Asynchronous Learning | |
| A Framework for Designing Questions for Online Learning | "This article describes a theoretical framework for designing questions for starting online discussion and follow-up questions to maintain the discussion. This framework is placed within a broader context of discussion within a constructivist, online environment." |
| The Written World: On the Theory and Practice of Computer Conferencing | "The elements described in this chapter constitute an ensemble of practices for successful computer conferencing. " From the online version of the book "Mindweave: Communication, Computers and Distance Education" |
| Paradigms
for On-Line Learning: A Case Study in the Design and Implementation of an
Asynchronous Learning Networks (ALN) Course |
"This paper examines paradigms used in on-line learning, with a specific emphasis on how to effectively employ asynchronous learning networks for delivery of on-line courses. Recent progress in ALNs is presented, methodologies for getting started in creating an ALN course given, and relationships between traditional teaching and learning methods and ALN-based courses discussed." |
| The Social Dimension of Asynchronous Learning Networks | "This paper argues that the social dimension is important to effectiveness of Asynchronous Learning Networks (ALNs) and needs to be taken into account in the design of courses. Evidence from an ethnographic study of the Teaching and Learning Online (TLO) course offered by the Institute of Education Technology at the Open University is presented in support of this argument. This study found that individual success or failure on the course depended upon the extent to which students were able to cross a threshold from feeling like outsiders to feeling like insiders." |

| Using
Instructional Design Principles To Amplify Learning On The World Wide Web |
"This article justifies and describes instructional design principles which can be used to transform Web material from simple informational resources to a powerful, instructional medium." This paper won the Best Paper Award for "Use of the World Wide Web" SITE 96 (Society for Info. Tech. and Teacher Education 7th World Conference) |

| Evaluation | |
| An Educator's Guide to Evaluating The Use of Technology in Schools and Classrooms | "The guide should be viewed as a tool for individuals who have little or no formal training in research or evaluation. Its intended informal style and accompanying worksheets provide the basic principles of evaluation and are designed to help district and school personnel gain an overview of and ideas for evaluating local technology initiatives." |
| Assessing Course Assignments Submitted as Web Pages | "This paper raises some issues regarding assessment of Web-based assignments. It is based on experience evaluating the work of more than 100 graduate students in an "Internet Resources for Education" course offered several times in the last three years. " |
| Evaluation for Distance Educators | One of a series of Guides for Distance Education from the U. of Idaho, College of Engineering. This guide discusses evaluation concepts and relates these concepts to distance instruction. |
| The "No Significant Difference Phenomenon" | "This site provides selected entries from the book "The No Significant Difference Phenomenon" as reported in 355 research reports, summaries and papers - a comprehensive research bibliography on technology for distance education." Also has links to a Significant Difference site. |
| History | |
| A Brief History of Instructional Development | Interesting in that much of this is common to I.T. |
| An Historical Perspective on Instructional Design | Instructional design is a key component in many definitions of I.T. this article provides a historical perspective on instructional design. |
| Computers in Education: A Brief History | While not on I.T. exactly I.T. is closely associated with it's tools so this article by Andrew Molnar may prove interesting. |
| Instructional Technology: A History | This site is a power point presentation on the history of Instructional Technology by Dr. Mahnaz Moallem. |
| The Evolution of Distance Learning | A article written in 1995 by Edward F. Spodick, from the Wellspring Site, that looks at the historical context of Distance Ed. and how it is evolved from mail and broadcast delivery to the current ability to deliver materials and interaction through the Web. |

| Policy | |
| Documenting the Effects of Instructional Technology: A Fly-Over of Policy Questions | "I begin with two assumptions: first, that we want to do credible science and second that we want that science to advance the contribution that instructional technology might make to learning. Trying to advance instructional technology makes my perspective partisan or political in the sense that I am acknowledging a particular value interest in the outcomes of this application of science,... In my view, evaluation research about education policy is intended to effect decisions and typically addresses pedagogy, politics and economics, all simultaneously." |
| Policy and Programs | The Policy and Programs domain provides information about issues at national, international, and institutional levels. It deals with such issues as those arising from the policy decision to establish a distance education system in the first place. |
