EDIT 6100/ Dick & Carey Model (ISD)
Summary and brief bibliography
Description of the Dick & Carey Model
Robin defined the
Dick and Carey model as having its roots in the Instructional Systems
Design (ISD) model which was initially used for training purposes
during World War II. Although several versions of this training model
exist, Dick and Carey have gained prominence in the field.
This theory consists of (1) goal identification, (2) instructional
analysis, (3) learner and context analysis, (4) definition of
objectives, (5) assessment instrument, (6) instructional strategy and
materials development, (7) formative evaluation, and (8) summative
evaluation of instruction.

and Carey Model Diagram

Characteristics
John discussed the
characteristics of the DCC model including the diagram and demonstrated a
real life project using this model to teach students how to save and
move file folders in the MSWindows environment.
Uses of Dick &
Carey Model
Haley discussed the
uses of the Dick & Carey Model including its use to develop WebCT.
Limitations of the
Dick & Carey Model
Erika discussed
the limitations of DCC:
- Behavior
is not predictable, so trying to predict behavior is an extremely
difficult task. This model does not lend itself to include
unpredictable behaviors.
- For
complex instruction, it is very time consuming to break instruction
down into all of its smaller components.
- The model
is linear, making it inflexible.
- Some
critics feel that the systems approach is too focused on specific
objectives to be successfully applied to the development of instruction
which supports higher level thinking and the active construction of
knowledge by learners.
- Not
applicable to non-instructional problems
Requires identification of outcomes.
