CASPASES
  • Caspases are a family of Cysteine Proteases that function in Apoptosis 
  • Currently there are 13 known members of the Caspase family 
  • The first of these to be discovered was Caspase-1 
  • It was identified based on its sequence similarity to the C.elegans “death gene” ced-13 
  • The name caspase is an abbreviation of the phrase Cysteine requiring ASPartate proteASE
