Dog intake begins when the animals arrive at the sanctuary. Intake is completed when the animals have been examined, vaccinated, treated for any immediate problems and housed in runs.
The intake process also includes the recording of data about the animal, both on paper and in an electronic database.

Moved to temporary intake area, watered, allowed to relieve, re-kenneled in runs. Sick/injured to triage.

In the video above, volunteers help unload cats and dogs who were brought up by truck from New Orleans. The dogs will be taken to the "Ellis Island" intake area and kenneled there until morning.

Physical processing of animal

Assign BF number

Digital photo for web

Polaroid for paperwork

Record physical description of animal (species, breed, age, sex, size, color, coat/ear/eye info, markings) on intake form

Scan for chip

Record chip# if detected, or chip animal & scan to confirm

Brief physical exam

Vaccinate for rabies

Give capstar; apply advantix

De-worm

Record all details of examination on treatment or intake form

All papers that came in with animal attached to BF paperwork. Details of found location copied to BF intake form.

In the video above, two Best Friends staff work with Dr. Charlie, a volunteer veterinarian, to muzzle a frightened dog so that he can be examined for intake.

Their gentle approach works wonders with this dog, who is ready to make friends by the end of the process.
