Street rescue is where it all begins.

In the early days, the streets were under water and the rescuers went in by boat.

Dead people, dead animals, looters in the next block...

By the time I visited New Orleans, things had calmed down considerably, but there were still plenty of needy animals.

Under the leadership of Jane Garrison (now of the newly-formed Animal Rescue New Orleans) crews of rescuers meet at Magazine Street, where they are given maps indicating the location of animal sightings and feeding stations.

New Orleans (video)

The video at left shows scenes of the streets and neighborhoods of New Orleans as of mid-October 2005..

The city is eerily quiet.

The smell is terrible.

Street Rescue (video)

The video at right shows a rescue crew from New Jersey trapping and catching a loose dog. Clearly once someone's pet, the dog was by now thin, filthy, and frightened out of its wits.

The rescuers use catchpoles to secure this dog. It is a widely accepted method but not the one preferred by Best Friends.
