These two blades are both from standing-decaying grasses.
Z. miliaceae is a freshwater grass from low- or zero-
salinity parts of the tidal mouth of the Altamaha River. S.
alterniflora is from the saltmarsh near the mouth of the
Altamaha. The Z. miliacea blades are nearly white, due
to absence of melanized fungal material, whereas the opposite
is true for S. alterniflora, in which blackened or brown
areas are clear indicators of large-scale fungal presence.
