The UGA Karate Club, founded in 1960, is the oldest active martial arts club at the University of Georgia.  The Karate Club's aim is to provide good physical conditioning while teaching the art, history and philosophy of Tae Kwon Do.  Membership is open to all students, faculty and staff, and beginners are welcome.  Students are not required to sign contracts, swear oaths, or purchase uniforms (although uniforms are available for anyone interested in them...click here for sizing and price information).

Our instructors come from a variety of martial arts backgrounds.  The club's primary style is the Moo Duk Kwan branch of Tae Kwon Do, although a number of other arts and traditions are represented within the membership.  Our chief instructor, Grand Master Jim Couch, has over forty years experience in the martial arts and holds an 8th degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do, a 6th degree black belt in Hapkido, and a 1st degree black belt in Judo.

The club participates in open tournaments throughout the year and hosts the annual St. Valentine's Day Classic every February.  In addition to being extremely competitive in tournaments, students learn self defense and self discipline.  We invite you to join us on Tuesday and Thursday evenings in the martial arts room (room #385) of the Ramsey Center.  Class hours are 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Tuesdays and 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. on Thursdays.  Open practices are held on Sundays from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., also in the martial arts room.

Fall Semester 2008:  Fall classes will begin on Tuesday, August 19.  New students are welcome...no martial arts experience is required.  We'll be accepting new people until around midterm, but the earlier you start the better.

Facebook Group:  Facebook.com members, and that's apparently most of you, are welcome to check out the club's Facebook group.  You can click this link or do a group search for UGA Karate Club.  It's decidedly more active and useful than the average Facebook group.

Mailing List:  However, Facebook groups are still pretty much for show, so if you want to be a little more connected join the club's listserv.  The listserv is tightly moderated and receives no spam whatsoever, so it's safe to join.

UGATKD.COM:  The domain name ugatkd.com has been reserved for this website.  It is simply a redirect; the pages themselves remain on the UGA servers.  Hence, you can reach this website either via its uga.edu URL or by entering ugatkd.com into your browser window.
