<ns1:abstract>Relationships are fundamental to supporting semantics, and hence to the Semantic Web. Till date, focus has been on simple relationships such as is-a and is-part-of, as in DAML/OIL. In this work, we adapt our earlier work on MREF to develop a framework for supporting complex relationships. A framework to manage complex relationships as discussed here becomes the basis for human directed knowledge discovery from the information interlinked by the Semantic Web.</ns1:abstract>

<ns1:abstract>We describe the Semantic Content Organization and Retrieval Engine (SCORE) technology in depth, and use it as the basis of describing some of the key components in building Semantic Web solutions. This is also an example of technology, which originated from academia, in this case the Large Scale Distributed Information Systems Lab (LSDIS) at the University of Georgia, and was licensed to start a company, Taalee, Inc. Taalee was later acquired by Voquette, Inc., which now provides commercial products and services based on the SCORE technology. The focus of this paper is on the patented SCORE technology and what it has to offer now and in the near term. Four core capabilities that the semantic technology discussed in this paper addresses are: Semantic Search and Personalization, Semantic Metadata, Semantic Normalization and Semantic Associations.</ns1:abstract>

<dc:title>Authorization and Access Control of Application Data in Workflow Systems</dc:title>
<ns1:abstract>Workflow Management Systems (WfMSs) are used to support the modeling and coordinated execution of business processes within an organization or across organizational boundaries. Although some research efforts have addressed requirements for authorization and access control for workflow systems, little attention has been paid to the requirements as they apply to application data accessed or managed by WfMSs. In this paper, we discuss key access control requirements for application data in workflow applications using examples from the healthcare domain, introduce a classification of application data used in workflow systems by analyzing their sources, and then propose a comprehensive data authorization and access control mechanism for WfMSs. This involves four aspects: role, task, process instance-based user group, and data content. For implementation, a predicate-based access control method is used. We believe that the proposed model is applicable to workflow applications and WfMSs with diverse access control requirements.</ns1:abstract>

      <dc:title>Workflow Quality of Service</dc:title>
<ns1:abstract>Workflow management systems (WfMSs) have been used to support various types of business processes for more than a decade now. In e-commerce processes, suppliers and customers define a binding agreement or contract between the two parties, specifying quality of service (QoS) items such as products or services to be delivered, deadlines, quality of products, and cost of service. Management of such QoS directly impacts success of organizations participating in e-commerce. Organizations operating in modern markets require an excellent degree of quality of service management. Products and services must be available to customers with well-defined specifications. A good management of quality leads to the creation of quality products and services, which in turn fulfills customer expectations and achieves customer satisfaction. Therefore, when services or products are created or managed using workflow processes, the underlying WfMS must accept the specification, be able to predict, monitor, and control the QoS rendered to customers. To achieve these objectives the first step is to develop an adequate QoS model for workflow processes and develop methods to compute QoS.</ns1:abstract>

<dc:title>Towards P2P semantic Web: A distributed Environment for Sharing Semantic Knowledge on the Web</dc:title>
<ns1:abstract>The real value of Semantic Web vision can be demonstrated if people and applications can create and discover new and interesting knowledge and share this knowledge in a transparent manner similar to the way data is exchanged today. Therefore, we believe that Semantic Web will consist of a distributed environment of shared and interoperable ontologies, which have emerged as common formalisms for knowledge representation. The users will need to discover new ontologies, which are not known to them before and use them to either annotate the content or to formulate their information requests. This requires an environment that supports creating, maintaining, and controlled sharing of ontologies. We believe that a Peer-to-Peer (P2P) infrastructure can enable such capabilities. We call our approach P2P Semantic Web (PSW) with capabilities to find relevant set of ontologies, facilitating reuse of existing ontologies to create additional ontologies, and advertising the resulting ontologies. We discuss an ontology driven search of concepts and services and exploration of inter-ontological relationships over a P2P infrastructure. The prototyping of this approach in the InfoQuilt system is also discussed.</ns1:abstract>

<dc:title>Complex Relationship and Knowledge Discovery Support in the InfoQuilt System</dc:title>
<ns1:abstract>Support for semantic content is becoming more common in Web-accessible information systems. We see this support emerging with the use of ontologies and machine-readable, annotated documents. The practice of domain modeling coupled with the extraction of domain-specific, contextually relevant metadata also supports the use of semantics.. These advancements enable knowledge discovery approaches that define complex relationships between data that is autonomously collected and managed. The InfoQuilt system supports one such knowledge discovery approach. This paper presents (parts of) the InfoQuilt system with the focus on its use for modeling and utilizing complex semantic inter-domain relationships to enable human-assisted knowledge discovery over Web-accessible heterogeneous data. This includes the specification and execution of Information Scale (IScapes), a semantically rich information request and correlation mechanism.</ns1:abstract>

<dc:title>Exception Handling for Conflict Resolution in Cross-Organizational Workflows</dc:title>
<ns1:abstract>Workflow management systems (WfMSs) are being increasingly deployed to deliver e-business transactions across organizational boundaries. To ensure a high service quality in such transactions, exception-handling schemes for conflict resolution are needed. The conflicts primarily arise due to failure of a task in workflow execution because of underlying application, or controlling WfMS component failures or insufficient user input. So far, little progress has been reported in addressing conflict resolution in cross-organizational business processes, though its importance has been recognized. In this paper, we identify the exception handling techniques that support conflict resolution in cross-organizational settings. In particular, we propose a novel, “bundled” exception-handling approach, which supports (1) exception knowledge sharing – sharing exception specifications and handling experiences, (2) coordinated exception handling, and (3) intelligent problem solving – using case based reasoning to reuse exception handing experiences. A prototype of this exception handling mechanism is developed and integrated as a part of the METEOR Workflow Management System. An evaluation of our approach is also presented through some sample workflow applications.</ns1:abstract>

In one direction, web service processes can be simulated for the purpose of correcting/improving the design. In the other direction, simulation models, components can be built out of web services. Work on seamlessly using simulation as a part of Web service composition and process design, as well as on using web services to re-build the JSIM web based simulation environment is highlighted.</ns1:abstract>

<dc:title>Workflow Management Systems vs ERP Systems: Differences, Commonalities, and Applications</dc:title>
<ns1:abstract>New economies and global markets with their accompanying intense competition has generated the need for organizations to develop and adopt new working models and infrastructures. Most companies have recognized the need for business process reorganization and vigilant management to increase efficiency and to survive intense competition. Information systems have been a widely adopted solution to support process redesign and management. In particular, two classes of systems have distinguished themselves: Workflow Management Systems (WfMSs) and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems. Both solutions focus on the automation of business processes, data transfer, and information sharing across the organization. While the targeted problems are the same, the technological approach and features of each solution are distinct. It is, therefore, important to discern the advantages and limitations of each system. In this paper we present a comprehensive description of the differences of the two systems. We also discuss how the two types of systems can be used independently and together to address intra (enterprise) and inter (e-Commerce) organizational application integration now and in the future. The “future” discussion will focus on roles of the two systems in the Web services architecture. This paper will help system implementers, managers and organizations to make better and more precise decisions when acquiring and implementing such systems.</ns1:abstract>

QoS management includes mechanisms that specify, compute, monitor, and control the quality of service of the products or services to be delivered. A good management of QoS directly impacts the success of organizations participating in e-commerce activities by better fulfilling customer expectations and achieving customer satisfaction. In this paper we present an implementation of a comprehensive QoS model for workflows we have specified earlier. While the implementation is being carried out for the METEOR workflow management system, the ideas presented here can also be applied to other workflow systems.
In this work we describe the components that have been changed, or added, and discuss how they interact to enable the specification, computation, and monitoring of QoS.</ns1:abstract>

      <dc:title>Semantic e-Workflow Composition</dc:title>
<ns1:abstract>Systems and infrastructures are currently being developed to support Web services. The main idea is to encapsulate an organization’s functionality within an appropriate interface and advertise it as Web services. While in some cases Web services may be utilized in an isolated form, it is normal to expect Web services to be integrated as part of workflow processes. The composition of workflow processes that model e-service applications differs from the design of traditional workflows, in terms of the number of tasks (Web services) available to the composition process, in their heterogeneity, and in their autonomy. Therefore, two problems need to be solved: how to efficiently discover Web services – based on functional and operational requirements – and how to facilitate the interoperability of heterogeneous Web services. In this paper, we present a solution within the context of the emerging Semantic Web, that includes use of ontologies to overcome some of the problems. We start by illustrating the steps involved in the composition of a workflow. Two of these steps are the discovery of Web services and their posterior integration into a workflow. To assist designers with those two steps, we have devised an algorithm to simultaneously discover Web services and resolve heterogeneity among their interfaces and the workflow host. Finally, we describe a prototype that has been implemented to illustrate how discovery and interoperability functions are achieved.</ns1:abstract>

<dc:title>Healthcare Enterprise Process Development and Integration</dc:title>
<ns1:abstract>Healthcare enterprises involve complex processes that span diverse groups and organizations. These processes involve clinical and administrative tasks, large volumes of data, and large numbers of patients and personnel. The tasks can be performed either by humans or by automated systems. In the latter case, the tasks are supported by a variety of software applications and information systems which are very often heterogeneous, autonomous, and distributed. The development of systems to manage and automate these processes has increasingly played an important role in improving the efficiency of healthcare enterprises. In this paper, we look at four healthcare and medical applications that involve investigative, clinical, and administrative functions. Based on these applications, we derive the requirements for developing enterprise applications that involve the coordination of a variety of tasks performed by humans, information systems, and legacy applications.</ns1:abstract>

<dc:title>Composition Performance Analysis and Simulation of Web Services</dc:title>
<ns1:abstract>The new paradigm for distributed computing over the Internet is that of Web services. They are Web accessible software components which can be combined and linked together to create new functionality in the form of Web processes. This also creates the need to compose services into processes that are efficient in terms of their performance. In this work, we describe our Service Composition and Execution Tool (SCET) and also describe the various methodologies that could be adopted for evaluating the performance of a Web process. SCET allows for composing services statically using its designer and storing them as Web Service Flow Language (WSFL) based specifications. Executing a process enables one to realize its functionality and also analyze its performance. For executing a process, SCET automatically generates execution code for a composed process. This work also lists techniques such as process execution time analysis and process execution monitoring that can be used to evaluate the performance of individual Web services involved in a process. As processes involving real world services are difficult to be analyzed for their performance, we have used simulation as an alternate technique for analyzing the efficiency of a process. SCET is integrated with the JSIM simulator, enabling users to simulate a process and get statistical performance results that approximate the actual process execution.</ns1:abstract>

<dc:title>Relationships at the Heart of Semantic Web: Modeling, Discovering, and Exploiting Complex Semantic Relationships</dc:title>
<ns1:abstract>The primary goal of today’s search and browsing techniques is to find relevant documents. As the current web evolves into the next generation termed the Semantic Web, the emphasis will shift from finding documents to finding facts, actionable information, and insights. Improving ability to extract facts, mainly in the form of entities, embedded within documents leads to the fundamental challenge of discovering relevant and interesting relationships amongst the entities that these documents describe. Relationships are fundamental to semantics—to associate meanings to words, terms and entities. They are a key to new insights. Knowledge discovery is also about discovery of heretofore new relationships. The Semantic Web seeks to associate annotations (i.e., metadata), primarily consisting of based on concepts (often representing entities) from one or more ontologies/vocabularies with all Web-accessible resources such that programs can associate “meaning with data”. Not only it supports the goal of automatic interpretation and processing (access, invoke, utilize, and analyze), it also enables improvements in scalability compared to approaches that are not semantics-based. Identification, discovery, validation and utilization of relationships (such as during query evaluation), will be a critical computation on the Semantic Web.

Based on our research over the last decade, this paper takes an empirical look at various types of simple and complex relationships, what is captured and how they are represented, and how they are identified, discovered or validated, and exploited. These relationships may be based only on what is contained in or directly derived from data (direct content based relationships), or may be based on information extraction, external and prior knowledge and user defined computations (content descriptive relationships). We also present some recent techniques for discovering indirect (i.e., transitive) and virtual (i.e., user-defined) yet meaningful (i.e., contextually relevant) relationships based on a set of patterns and paths between entities of interest. In particular, we will discuss modeling, representation and computation or validation of three types of complex semantic relationships: (a) using predefined multi-ontology relationships for query processing and corresponding the issue of “loss of information” investigated in the OBSERVER project, (b) r (Rho) operator for semantic associations which seeks to discover contextually relevant and relevancy ranked indirect relationships or paths between entities using semantic metadata and relevant knowledge, and (c) IScapes which allows interactive, human-directed knowledge validation of hypothesis involving user-defined relationships and operations in a multi-ontology, and multi-agent InfoQuilt system.

Representing, identifying, discovering, validating and exploiting complex relationships are important issues related to realizing the full power of the Semantic Web, and can help close the gap between highly separated information retrieval and decision-making steps.</ns1:abstract>

<dc:title>The Rho Operator: Discovering and Ranking Associations on the Semantic Web</dc:title>
<ns1:abstract>In this paper, we introduce an approach that supports querying for Semantic Associations on the Semantic Web. Semantic Associations capture complex relationships between entities involving sequences of predicates, and sets of predicate sequences that interact in complex ways. Detecting such associations is at the heart of many research and analytical activities that are crucial to applications in national security and business intelligence. This in combination with the improving ability to identify entities in documents as part of automatic semantic annotation, gives a very powerful capability for semantic analysis of large amounts of heterogeneous content.</ns1:abstract>

<dc:title>Workflow Management Systems and ERP Systems: Differences, Commonalities, and Applications</dc:title>
The "future" discussion will focus on roles of the two systems in the Web services architecture. There is a real need for those in both business and academic organizations to have a holistic view of these two technologies to guide their decisions regarding business process improvement practice and research.</ns1:abstract>
