Project

Abstract:

My client is Mrs. Millicent Mazyck. She is a retired music teacher. Currently, she is the minister of music at Tabernacle Baptist Church in Augusta, Georgia. She also teaches piano in her spare time. Mrs. Mazyck has brought it to my attention that she desires to have a interactive and innovative way of teaching her choir members ideals and concepts about music. She has come to realize that a lot of the members become bored and disinterested in learning music theory the traditional way.
I have decided to take the task of designing a tutorial for her choir members. After conversing with her, we have decided that the tutorial should give a little history of music, some basic musical notes and finally some musical terminology. We both agreed that there should be some kind of post test as well as some interactivity to liven up the site.

Goal:
The ultmate goal of this instruction is to provide adult members of the Tabernacle Baptist Church music ministry with a basic understanding of music theory. Learners will grasp the concept of music theory, notes, counts, etc.

Instructional Objectives:
-Choir members will gain an understanding of the history of music
-Choir members will interpret the meanings of specific musical notes
-Choir members will be able to identify the value of notes and rests
-Choir members will understand the various voices in a choir

Flow Chart

Learner Analysis:
-Intended audience: intermediate to advanced choir members
-Members range of age: 18-75
-Most members have not had professional, organized musical experience
-Some choir members are having difficulty reading music and understanding counts and notes

Instructional Model:
I used Vygotsky's theory of scaffolding and constructionism to design the learning module. In this case, the computer acts as the More Knowledgeable Other (MKO). It provides the user with the necessary material to meet the prescribed objectives. The module is designed to act as a scaffold. Once the members of the various choirs meet the prescribed objectives, the next step is to use the process of fading and take away the module.

Instructional Medium Rationale:
The majority of the choir members are passionate about music and singing in general. However, 90% of them didn't have previous music experience and don't have an understanding of general music theory. Providing them with an interactive learning module allows them to enjoy something innovative and fun. It gives them the opportunity to participate in something that htey haven't done before and be able to learn at the same time. Most of the members that will be using the module are adults and have access to a computer at home or at work. The module provides the members with a fun and interactive way to learn and it can be done in the comfort of their own home.
